Miigwetch Nshoomis

Nathan Adler | Canada 2018

There are two audio pieces that are part of this work, one in Anishinaabemowin and one in English. For each version I made a separate audio-scape to match the words, and I wrote both pieces concurrently, so they inform each other, and are translations of each other, neither one really came first. It is a spoof on the Ojibwe language morning prayer I learned in Shirly Williams language class at Trent University, a prayer written by Isadore Toulouse.
Iā€™m my version an Anishinaabe youth falls in love with the sun, and this poem/spoken word piece is his love letter to the object of his effection: Grandfather Sun. Nshoomis Giizis. A queer love letter between 2 very different types of beings.
