Eva Thomas, Writer & Story Editor, Participant in the imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Story Editing Mentorship

“The imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Story Editing Mentorship was a fantastic experience.  I was keen to learn more about story editing because I wanted to work with writers on their scripts.  Since completing this program, I have worked with multiple writers on their projects through the imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Screenwriting Intensive, the Magee TV Diverse Screenwriters Program and the Women in Film and Television-Vancouver’s Tricksters and Writers Program.  If you want to understand the business of feature film development, strengthen your sense of story and develop your own skill-set, then I recommend you apply for this program!”

- Eva Thomas, Writer & Story Editor, Inaugural participant in the imagineNATIVE/HGF Indigenous Story Editing Mentorship

The only initiative of its kind in Canada is to increase Indigenous expertise in feature film script development by providing one selected applicant a mentorship (September to October 2020) with established Harold Greenberg Fund Script Readers and shadow the Indigenous Story Editors of the imagineNATIVE Indigenous Screenwriting Intensive.

The Harold Greenberg Fund is a national funding organization that supports the development of Canadian dramatic feature films. Starting in fall 2019, the selected mentee will meet with HGF staff to learn the behind-the-scenes processes of story development.

Alan Bacchus of the Harold Greenberg Fund will mentor the participant through the Fund’s Script Development process. The participant will observe the lifecycle of many projects as they move through the HGF system: from application to adjudication to the final decision-making process and beyond.

The participant will have a chance to read submissions and observe the creative decision-making process. They will learn to write coverage reports on selected scripts to help develop their creative analytical skills. In addition, the participant will sit in on story calls with selected projects in development and observe the process of giving notes and project-tracking. The participant is encouraged to work on writing their own projects during this time and can receive feedback from HGF personnel for these projects.

The participant will also be invited to shadow Indigenous Story Editors leading the imagineNATIVE Indigenous Screenwriting Intensive(s), a program for Indigenous writers where feature-length film scripts are developed from concept to final draft, culminating with a live-reading of the scripts at the imagineNATIVE Festival.

A confidentiality contract will be signed between HGF and the participant.

imagineNATIVE will bolster the mentorship throughout with access support to other leading story editing and writing leaders in the screen industry, tailored to the mentees career interests.

This is an excellent and rare learning opportunity for any Indigenous Canadian writer or artist looking to engage with experts in the art, practice and business of story editing.
